History of the College!

Named after the legendary Kannada literary luminary Rashtrakavi Manjeshwar Govinda Pai (1883-1963), the Government College, Manjeshwar was envisioned to transform the Social, Cultural and Educational landscape of Northern Malabar region of Kerala.

Govinda Pai had enriched Kannada literature and poetry by his creative and scholastic works and was conferred the title of Rashtrakavi by the erstwhile Government of Madras along with Mahakavi Vallathol. He was an erudite scholar, national poet, dramatist, polyglot, researcher, historian, social reformer, philosopher, humanist, secularist and a multi faceted genius. He was a living model for love, compassion, universal brotherhood and religious harmony.

Reverberating the ideals of the pioneer of Modern Kannada Literature, the institution was formally inaugurated on 22nd September 1980 by Sri E. K. Nayanar, the Chief Minister of Kerala.

Other notable dignitaries who were also present on the auspicious the occasion included Sri R.Gundu Rao, the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Sri Baby John, Minister of Education, Government of Kerala, Dr. A. Subha Rao, Minister of Irrigation, Government of Kerala and Sri Veerappa Moily, Minister of Finance, Government of Karnataka etc.,

Govinda Pai Memorial Govt. College is located in a historically significant area with its roots starting from the Prehistoric period up to the Modern period of Indian National movements shaping the history of the nation in general and South India in particular.
